Fans were completely taken aback by Paul Rudd’s unexpected appearance in the second season finale of Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. The final episode’s setup of the third season’s events featured a brief appearance by the actor. Fans initially believed it was a one-time occurrence, but sources has revealed that Rudd has joined the Season 3 cast.
Only Murder in the Building revolves around a strange group of characters, including Charles Haden Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mable Mora, who all have a true crime as well as podcasting fascination. After the horrific death of Arconia Board President Bunny Folger, the three successfully identified her killer as the season’s high point. Additionally, in the final scene of Season 2, Oliver is seen returning to Broadway in a play alongside renowned performer Ben Glenroy, played by Rudd. Before going on stage, Glenroy and his co-star Charles have some conflict. However, as soon as he steps onto the stage, Glenroy starts to bleed from the mouth and exhibits other symptoms of poisoning before passing away in front of the audience. All suspicious glances are now on Charles, who was last seen with him during a difficult situation. For the upcoming season, this undoubtedly sets a new mystery.
At the end of season 2, series co-creator John Hoffmann referred to Rudd’s entry into the franchise as “auspicious,” saying Glenroy “is someone we want to know more about and see in our upcoming Season 3.” Hoffmann claims Rudd’s role is “a clear source of many upcoming questions and, as ever with our show, many twists yet to come!” even though it is unclear whether he will be appearing on a regular, recurrent, or guest basis. The show’s third season was approved in July of last year.
Only Murder in the Building earned recognition for its comic take on the mystery genre during its two seasons. The show received 17 Primetime Emmy nominations this year, including nods for Martin and Short in the categories of Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Together with Hoffmann, Martin co-wrote the series. Along with Short, Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jamie Babbit, and Jess Rosenthal, the two also serves as executive producers.
The streaming service is now airing seasons 1 and 2. The release of Season 3 on Hulu is planned to occur sometime in the summer of 2023.
