Samsung is no longer the laggard it was a few years ago when it comes to rolling out major Android OS updates. Sure, not as timely as Google, but with Android 10, things have been way better than previous years.
Make no mistake, Samsung is nowhere near perfect. Matter of fact, being the industry leader it is, the Korean company still has some work to do to catch up with Google or even OnePlus.
For instance, whereas Google and OnePlus smartphones receive three major OS updates, Samsung, despite selling some of the most expensive smartphones on the planet, only guarantees two major OS updates.
While the promise of regular security patches for up to four years takes some pressure off Samsung’s shoulders, two years of OS updates for devices that cost in the regions of $1,000 and increasingly more is simply unacceptable.
Luckily, the massive Android developer community hardly disappoints on this front. Plenty of custom ROM developers live for this moment where they can step in and provide abandoned device owners with Android OS updates for years.
LineageOS is one such custom ROM. For years, Samsung devices that didn’t get a chance to switch to the next official Android OS version have relied on LineageOS to get a taste of the new features that ship in updated OS versions.

Note that Samsung devices with official LineageOS 17.1 support will receive OTA updates on the regular. As for those with unofficial LineageOS support, one must manually update their devices whenever a new version is available.
