Runkeeper is one of the oldest and most popular GPS-based fitness tracking app available on both iOS as well as Android. The app offers free fitness tracking in addition to a premium subscription called Runkeeper Go.
While the free version will track activities such as walking, cycling, and running along with some basic statistics, the premium version builds on the same and provides more detailed information along with training plans and performance comparison.
That being said, frequent updates to the app often cause trouble and introduce bugs and glitches. Now, Runkeeper users are reporting (1,2,3,4,5) that the iOS 15.2 and WatchOS 8.3 update is causing the app to crash.
Some even reported GPS issues after the recent update, with others saying that the app is not updating stats when the phone is locked. Users’ reports suggest that the app does not track anything when they switch to a different app or turn off the screen.
With background tracking not working, many say that the app is completely unusable. People said they tried reinstalling the app but iOS seems to be shutting it down in the background after a while.
Thankfully, Runkeeper Support has commented on the matter and said that they are indeed aware of the GPS issue affecting those who updated to iOS 15.2. They did not share any ETA on when it will be fixed.
They also shared a workaround that involves keeping Runkeeper in the foreground and leaving the screen on, which is really inconvenient and impractical.
Nonetheless, we will be keeping an eye out on the matter and update this article when Runkeeper developers fix the GPS bug.
Update (December 22)
IST 12:56 pm: Runkeeper support has come out to issue a workaround to affected persons. They now advice users to try uninstalling and reinstalling the Runkeeper app to the 12.3.1 app version.
According to them, this will reset the app information and fix known GPS issues caused during updating iOS to 15.2.
