The big news this week is that there are three new Star Wars games in development at EA, and none of them are Star Wars Battlefront 3. This is great news for fans of the Star Wars franchise, as they will hopefully soon have a catalog of Star Wars video games to choose from that should appeal to a broad range of audiences. Fans of strategy games, first-person shooters, and singleplayer adventures will have a little something to keep them occupied when each of these games is released. However, possibly the most exciting game to fans of the Star Wars Battlefront series is the new Star Wars FPS.

This upcoming Star Wars first-person shooter is set to be developed by Respawn Entertainment, the developer behind the likes of Apex Legends and Titanfall. The last Star Wars Battlefront game was released in 2017, so fans have been waiting some time for another Star Wars shooter. This upcoming project could be the one fans have been waiting for, but to this point, little is known about the game. One thing that is certain to fans of Star Wars and Respawn Entertainment games alike is that however the new Star Wars FPS turns out, it needs to make a good first impression.

What Happened to Star Wars Battlefront 2?

Some fans may be questioning why the upcoming Star Wars FPS isn’t going to complete a Star Wars Battlefront trilogy. Star Wars Battlefront is a big name in gaming, and while it is likely that the upcoming FPS simply doesn’t fit the mold of a Battlefront game, there also may be another reason behind the apparent snub. Despite maintaining a strong fanbase for many years, Star Wars Battlefront 2 faced a challenge in reaching the heights many had expected it would. Ultimately it may have fallen short of fans’ expectations, despite many praising the game’s gameplay and story.

Much of the reason behind the disappointment of Star Wars Battlefront 2 comes from its troubled launch. The game wasn’t received particularly well by fans at launch due to Star Wars Battlefront 2’s microtransactions, which were considered to be pay-to-win. This led to fans abandoning the game and leaving negative review scores, harming the game’s reception and turning away potential players. Respawn Entertainment’s upcoming Star Wars FPS needs to avoid any slip-ups at launch in order to meet its potential, and the lofty expectations of fans. As has been seen in the case of Battlefront 2, a bad first impression could massively harm the game before it’s even able to get off the ground.

How The Upcoming Star Wars FPS Can be a Success

It is also important that Star Wars’ new FPS aligns more with what fans are hoping for from a Star Wars or Respawn Entertainment shooter. For starters, while a first-person shooter’s titular attribute is its shooting, in a Star Wars game, lightsabers are always important gameplay aspects. But unfortunately, Star Wars Battlefront’s lightsaber combat leaves a bit to be desired.

Despite being a major aspect of the Star Wars franchise, if gamers are looking for melee combat, there are a number of games gamers would turn to before Star Wars Battlefront. A melee combat system more along the lines of Jedi: The Fallen Order would be a big improvement that would go down well with fans.

Along with Star Wars fans will be a fair amount of Titanfall fans looking for an alternative to Titanfall 3. There will be a good amount of Titanfall fans who are disappointed that their favorite series, for now, appears to be on ice, but a good first impression could win these fans over. Being able to communicate that the upcoming Star Wars FPS shares a lot in common with the Titanfall series gameplay-wise could be a good start, although exactly what the Star Wars game will be is still up in the air.

Several Star Wars games are in development.
