New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on July 30, 2020) follows:

The MIUI 12 update has been rolling out to numerous Xiaomi devices for some time now. While devices in the home country – China – bagged the update first, the OEM is now pushing the latest custom skin to the Global devices as well. One such device is the Redmi Note 9.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 received the MIUI 12 update recently while its Chinese variant i.e. the Redmi 10X 4G already bagged it back in June. While the update is out for the Global Redmi Note 9 units, there are some regions where users are having trouble downloading it.

There are multiple reports where users from Pakistan are not able to download the MIUI 12 update on their Redmi Note 9. Many users took to the Xiaomi community and posted their concerns on the official MIUI 12 announcement thread.

A Xiaomi moderator responded to users’ queries stating that the ISPs in Pakistan have blocked Xiaomi servers. This is why users from Pakistan are not able to grab the much awaited MIUI 12 update.

However, users have come up with a workaround for this issue and the same has been confirmed by the moderator as well. The workaround is to go for a VPN (Virtual Private Network) which is allowing users to download the update.

It seems only natural for users to find a solution for themselves as the OEM has nothing in particular to do with this issue. While it is unclear as to why Pakistani ISPs are blocking Xiaomi servers, using a VPN appears to be the only workaround for now.

Also, it was pointed out that the update download is getting stuck in between. An additional workaround has been provided for this issue which involves clearing app cache. Here’s what the post read:

While these workarounds appear to be working for some users, some are still unable to get the update even when using the said VPN hack. For this, the moderator has stated that it has already been reported.

Meanwhile, we hope that the issue gets resolved for Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 users in Pakistan soon. Till then, stay tuned to PiunikaWeb for more such stories.

Update 1 (July 31)

Apparently, users are now able to download system updates as usual on their Xiaomi phones in Pakistan. Further, it appears that the ban on PUBG in the country has also been lifted according to a user on the Mi Community forums.

Do note that this is coming from a user and Xiaomi has not yet confirmed or denied the information. Thus, we may have to wait for more evidence to know whether or not the information is accurate.
